IIT-JEE Coaching - Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the eligibility criteria for IIT JEE?

(i) The new JEE will consist of 2 Test Main TEST and ADVANCED TEST.

(ii)Only the top 1,50,000 candidates(including all categories) based on performance in JEE(MAINS) will qualify to appear in the JEE(ADVANCED) examination, which will rank candidates for admissions to IITS, provided the candidates are among the top 20% high scores of their respective boards in class XII examination.

The following procedure will be used for selecting the 1,50,000 candidates who will be eligible to appear for JEE (Advanced)- based on their performance in JEE(Main)-.

(a) 50.5% of the 1,50,000(75,500 candidates) will be taken from the top rankers of the Common Merit List(CML) of JEE (Main).27%(40,500),15%(22,500) and 7.5%(11,250) candidates will be taken from the top rankers of the category rank lists of OBC-NCL,SC and ST, respectively. The candidates figuring in the category rank lists will be those who do not figure in the 75,750 candidates chosen from the CIVIL.

(b) 3% of the candidates selected within each category will be those belonging to PwD (Persons with Disability) sub-category, who figure in the respective rank lists of JEE (Main).

(c) Only the candidated's aggregate marks in JEE(Main) will be considered and no tie-break mechanism will be implemented at this stage. This will make the list of candidates eligible to appear in JEE(Advanced)- slightly more than 1,50,000 due to bunching of candidates with the same aggregate marks at the bottom of each category.

2. Are the question papers of the IIT JEE and Std.XII similar ?

The nature of the IIT JEE question papers is totally different from that of the Board. Every question is of a very searching type, and tough in nature, like a riddle. The questions test the student's academic ability, analytical ability, alertness and approach in various aspects of the subject. Board's papers of Std. XII are very straightforward like those of Std.X.

3. Is the portion of the IIT JEE same as that of Std.XI & XII ?

There are only three subjects in the IIT JEE : Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. The IIT JEE covers almost all the topics of Std.XI and Std.XII and few more topics of higher level as well as some of even Std.X. (Their weightage in the IIT Exam paper is broadly : Std.X - 5%, Std.XI 45%, Std.XII - 45%, Higher - 5%).

4. Will preparation for the IIT JEE disturb the Std.XII studies ?

As mentioned above, the syllabus of the IIT JEE also covers the syllabus of Std.XII. Therefore preparation for the IIT JEE will not disturb the Std.XII studies. In fact a well planned and well coordinated effort for the IIT JEE will definitely help in the preparation for Std.XII.

5. What is the right time to start preparation for the IIT JEE ?

The IIT JEE consists of almost all the topics of Std.XI and Std.XII and a few more topics of a higher level as well as Std.X. As mentioned earlier, the nature of the questions set in the IIT papers is entirely different from that of the Board Exam of Std.X or XII. Every question asked in the IIT papers is of a searching nature and is based on deep fundamental concepts. The problems set in the IIT papers are very difficult, and can be tackled only by those who have a clear understanding of the basic concepts and sufficient practice of handling such problems. Hence, the preparation for the IIT has to be a gradual and well planned study, properly coordinated with that of Std.XI and XII.

6. Will preparation for IIT JEE also help in preparation for other Engineering Entrance Exams like the AIEEE and other State level Engineering Entrance Exams ?

As is well known, the IIT JEE is one of the most difficult entrance examinations held in the country. The syllabus of AIEEE is similar to that of IIT JEE. Also, the syllabus of MHT-CET is exactly identical to that of the Std.XII Board Exam. As mentioned earlier, the IIT JEE also covers the syllabus of Std.XII .

Therefore, preparing for IIT JEE will not only help students to tackle the IIT JEE successfully, but will also help them to prepare better and more effectively for other All India Level Engineering Entrance Exams like the AIEEE and State level Engineering Entrance Exams like MHT-CET.
